JUST IN: Trump-Backed Candidate Defeats ‘RINO’ Lawmaker Who Blocked Key Redistricting Effort
In an early race call, one of the Trump-backed GOP challengers to a handful of Indiana state senators has emerged victorious. The race call marks the first confirmed flip after President Donald Trump backed primary challenges to Indiana lawmakers who blocked a popular redistricting effort that would have drawn out a seat currently held by Democrats.
Fiechter, a Bluffton City Council member and real estate broker, won the Republican primary for Indiana State Senate District 19 on Tuesday night. Early election results showed Fiechter receiving 5,974 votes, or 58.41 percent, compared to 4,253 votes, or 41.59 percent, for incumbent Senator Travis Holdman.
With 10,227 votes counted, the outcome represented a clear victory for the challenger in a race that drew attention due to its connection to earlier legislative disputes over congressional maps.
District 19 covers portions of northeastern Indiana, including Wells County, where Bluffton is located, along with parts of several neighboring counties. Holdman, who first entered the Senate in 2008, had represented the district for 18 years. During his lengthy career, Holdman served as majority caucus chair and chaired the Senate’s Tax and Fiscal Policy Committee.
As the incumbent and a longtime figure in state Republican leadership, Holdman entered the primary as the established candidate. Fiechter, in his first term on the Bluffton City Council after winning election in 2023, positioned his campaign around support for policies aligned with national Republican priorities.
Fletcher will now face Democrat challenger Timothy Murphy, who ran unopposed in his party’s primary, this coming November. Election officials noted that final certification of results could take several days as outstanding ballots are processed, but the margin established Fiechter as the nominee early on election night.
Campaign finance reports prior to the primary indicated Holdman held a significant fundraising advantage, with hundreds of thousands of dollars on hand.

The contest occurred against the backdrop of a 2025 dispute over congressional redistricting. In December 2025, the Indiana State Senate considered a bill to redraw the state’s nine U.S. House districts outside the normal decennial cycle following the 2020 census.
Proponents, including President Donald Trump and Republican Governor Mike Braun, argued the new map could create two additional Republican-leaning seats for the 2026 midterm elections. The proposal passed the Indiana House but failed in the Senate by a 19-31 vote, with more than 20 Republican senators joining Democrats in opposition. Holdman was among those who voted against the measure.
Following the Senate’s rejection, Trump publicly endorsed primary challengers to several Republican senators who had opposed the redistricting effort. In a series of social media posts, Trump described the incumbents as blocking opportunities to strengthen the party’s position in Congress and encouraged voters to support alternative candidates in the May primaries.
The president ultimately endorsed challengers in at least seven state Senate races, setting up what has widely been viewed as a measuring stick of Trump’s endorsement power ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Several conservative grassroots organizations, including Turning Point USA, also contributed resources to ousting the dissenting Republican lawmakers.
As of 7:47 p.m. Eastern Time, a number of additional Trump-endorsed candidates are leading against their incumbent challengers in Indiana. Additional results are expected in the near future.
