JUST IN: US State To Allow Illegals To Become Police Officers

Published

on

The State of Illinois has elected to allow non-citizens, these being DACA recipients, to become police officers according to The Post Millennial.  Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the bill permitting House Bill 3751 into law and remarked that “We have the ability for people who are legally here in this country, and permanent residents and DACA residents, to apply for jobs as police officers.” DACA residents are those who are the children who were brought into the United States illegally by their parents when they were minors.

The law authorized “an individual who is not a citizen but is legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law is authorized to apply for the position of police officer, subject to all requirements and limitations, other than citizenship, to which other applicants are subject.” The non-citizen applying to become a police officer must, however, be permitted to possess and purchase a firearm under federal law.

While The Post Millennial writes that “federal law prohibits non-US citizens from serving as police officers and deputies,”, an examination of job requirements for police officer by Police 1 qualifies the requirements as varying “from state to state and even agency to agency.” It also observed that “most departments look for these minimum qualifications in their applicant pools.” As part of those minimum requirements was that “[t]he applicant is a citizen of the United States.”

The UCLA police force for instance has a standard of hiring “[a] citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship and will be a US citizen at time of appointment (resident aliens are eligible if they have applied for citizenship at least one year prior to taking the written test).”

It therefore appears that local police forces may not have such a strict observance of the (not cited) federal law that The Post Millennial mentions. Nevertheless, the news of the law made ripples in conservative circles. Representative Mary Miller (R-IL) wrote “At 5pm yesterday, when no one was paying attention, Pritzker signed a bill to allow illegal immigrants to become police officers, giving non-citizens the power to arrest citizens in our state. No sane state would allow foreign nationals to arrest their citizens, this is madness!”

Lauren Boebert (R-CO) commented that “In the state of Illinois, illegals can now become police officers. Yes, you heard that right. People who are breaking the law by their presence here can now arrest American citizens. You know the other blue states are watching and getting ready to implement this idea as soon as they can! We either address this border crisis or allow our country to descend further into a Leftist dystopia.”

The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police commented on the nature of the legislation that it sends the wrong message and that it allows those without legal status to become enforcers of the law.

Fox News observed that this law comes amid major recruitment and shortages among the Illinois police.
