New York City’s first lady, Rama Duwaji, is facing scrutiny over a string of old social media posts in which she praised figures tied to terrorism and echoed anti-American rhetoric, according to a review of her past accounts.

The posts, uncovered by the Washington Free Beacon, date back to when Duwaji was a teenager and in her early 20s. They include references to members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization, and content glorifying the First Intifada.

In one September 2017 Tumblr post, Duwaji shared an image of Palestinian terrorist Leila Khaled alongside a quote attributed to her.

“If it does good for my cause, I’ll be happy to accept death,” the caption read.

Khaled, a longtime PFLP member, took part in two plane hijackings in 1969 and 1970 and became a symbol for extremist groups. During one incident, she threatened to detonate a grenade to gain access to a cockpit.

Other posts show Duwaji highlighting additional PFLP figures. In March 2015, she reposted a message praising Shadia Abu Ghazaleh, a militant involved in attacks on Israeli targets who was killed in an accidental explosion while assembling a bomb.

“shadia abu ghazaleh, first palestinian woman to fight in resistance after 1967 occupation #InternationalWomensDay,” the post read.

Duwaji also shared historical imagery tied to Palestinian uprisings. In a December 2017 Tumblr post, she uploaded a photo of a demonstrator sewing a Palestinian flag during the late 1980s.

“Photography: ‘A Palestinian demonstrator sews a Palestinian Liberation Organization flag before a protest during the first Intifada’, February, 1988,” the caption reads.

The First Intifada, which lasted from 1987 to 1993, was marked by widespread violence and helped give rise to Hamas.

In another September 2017 post, she shared an image of a Bangladeshi postage stamp that read, “We salute the valiant freedom fighters of Palestine.”

Duwaji also reposted a message in July 2015 sharply criticizing U.S. troops.

“*taps mic* American soldiers fighting in imperialist wars are not brave nor are they fighting for anyone’s freedom,” the post read. “They are mercilessly slaughtering 3rd world civilians and fighting to maintain American hegemony. That is all, thank you! *drops mic*”

The posts appear to have been made while Duwaji was living in the Middle East. Born in New Jersey to a Syrian family, she moved to Dubai as a child before later attending Virginia Commonwealth University, eventually transferring from its Qatar campus to Richmond.

The accounts tied to the posts are no longer active.
