Mitt Romney Issues Stunning Defense Of Trump Against Manhattan DA

Published

on

Former President Donald Trump and Senator Mitt Romney have had a tumultuous relationship. While Romney has been a vocal critic of Trump’s behavior and rhetoric, it didn’t stop him from coming to Trump’s defense after his arraignment on Tuesday.

Romney bashed Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, saying in a statement, “I believe the New York prosecutor has stretched to reach felony criminal charges in order to fit a political agenda. No one is above the law, not even former presidents, but everyone is entitled to equal treatment under the law.

“The prosecutor’s overreach sets a dangerous precedent for criminalizing political opponents and damages the public’s faith in our justice system,” he continued.

The fact that Romney spoke out against Trump’s indictment speaks volumes about the Left’s agenda and their political persecution.

FULL STATEMENT:
“I believe President Trump’s character and conduct make him unfit for office. Even so, I believe the New York prosecutor has stretched to reach felony criminal charges in order to fit a political agenda. No one is above the law, not even former presidents, but everyone is entitled to equal treatment under the law. The prosecutor’s overreach sets a dangerous precedent for criminalizing political opponents and damages the public’s faith in our justice system.

“The charges and evidence will be duly considered and the outcome decided by a jury with an obligation to fulfill its responsibility with the utmost care and impartiality. The American voters will ultimately render their own judgment on the former President’s political future

“Finally, it is also incumbent on all elected leaders to discourage violence and anger in response to this situation.”

Romney and Trump have a complex history. In the 2012 presidential election, Trump endorsed Romney during his campaign, donating to his campaign and publicly supporting him on social media.

However, in the years following the election, Romney became a vocal critic of Trump. In the 2016 Republican presidential primary, Romney was a leading voice in the “Never Trump” movement, which sought to prevent Trump from winning the nomination. Romney gave a speech in March 2016 in which he called Trump a “phony” and a “fraud” and urged Republicans to vote for anyone but him.

After Trump won the election, Romney expressed some cautious optimism about his presidency, but also continued to criticize him on certain issues. In particular, Romney has spoken out against Trump’s divisive rhetoric and his handling of foreign policy.

In early 2019, Romney was elected to the Senate, and he quickly became one of the most outspoken Republican critics of Trump. He was one of the few Republicans to vote in favor of convicting Trump in both of his impeachment trials, and he has frequently criticized Trump’s actions and statements on a variety of issues. In response, Trump has frequently attacked Romney on social media, calling him a “failed presidential candidate” and a “RINO” (Republican In Name Only).
