OFFICIAL: Tim Walz’s Minnesota Under Federal Investigation

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is facing intensifying scrutiny after Vice President JD Vance confirmed that federal authorities are investigating whether state officials failed to properly respond to massive fraud allegations tied to taxpayer-funded programs across the state.

The investigation follows a sweeping federal operation carried out across the Minneapolis area late last month, when FBI agents and federal investigators executed more than 20 search warrants targeting businesses connected to child care services, autism treatment programs and other publicly funded operations.

Federal officials say the probe centers on allegations involving fraudulent Medicaid reimbursements, abuse of state and federal child care assistance programs and other forms of misuse involving taxpayer dollars. Authorities have not released a final estimate for the alleged losses, though Trump administration officials have suggested the total amount under investigation could reach into the billions.

“[Minnesota is] under investigation by our great vice president,” Trump said Wednesday. “They’re finding a lot.”

The issue has quickly become a political flashpoint between the Trump administration and Democratic leaders in Minnesota.

Vance has accused Walz’s administration of failing to aggressively confront fraud concerns that had allegedly been developing for years. The vice president said federal authorities were forced to step in after what he described as insufficient oversight at the state level.

“We really did not get much help at all from the Governor’s office,” Vance said on Will Cain’s show. “Where we actually did get help was from state and local law enforcement officers who we assigned to the task force because the state government wasn’t doing anything so all credit goes to people on the ground the federal officers, the state officers who are working to uncover this fraud.”

The comments marked one of the strongest public criticisms yet from the White House regarding Walz’s handling of fraud investigations in Minnesota.

The situation escalated further after Walz publicly praised coordination between state and federal law enforcement following the raids. FBI Director Kash Patel later pushed back on that characterization, arguing that federal agencies led the operation and suggesting Minnesota officials were not central to the investigation.

The latest controversy arrives as Minnesota continues dealing with fallout from the massive “Feeding Our Future” fraud case, one of the largest pandemic-era fraud scandals in the country. Federal prosecutors previously charged dozens of individuals accused of stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from programs intended to provide meals to children during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Republicans now argue the newer investigation points to broader oversight failures inside Minnesota’s government.

Critics of Walz have also pointed to allegations made by a former Minnesota state trooper, who claimed state officials discouraged deeper investigations into fraud-related activity and retaliated against investigators who pushed too aggressively into sensitive cases.

Walz has strongly rejected accusations that his administration ignored wrongdoing. The governor has argued that state agencies have worked alongside federal investigators and helped uncover fraudulent activity. He has also accused the Trump administration of turning the issue into a political weapon ahead of upcoming elections.

“We catch criminals when state and federal agencies share information. Joint investigations work, and securing justice depends on it,” said Walz.

Despite those defenses, pressure surrounding the investigation continues to build.

The Trump administration has reportedly moved to delay or freeze portions of federal Medicaid funding connected to Minnesota programs while investigators review allegations tied to fraud and oversight failures. Administration officials say the move is intended to protect taxpayer money while reforms are considered.

Meanwhile, Vance has signaled that the administration’s anti-fraud initiative may expand beyond Minnesota. The vice president has repeatedly argued that the federal government must take a far more aggressive approach toward investigating abuse involving taxpayer-funded programs.

As the investigation continues, federal authorities have not announced criminal charges tied directly to Walz or members of his administration. Still, the growing federal probe has placed Minnesota squarely at the center of one of the Trump administration’s highest-profile anti-fraud efforts to date.
