REPORT: Longtime CBS Host Faces Humiliating Demotion
CBS News bosses are weighing a move that would sideline longtime morning host Gayle King into a scaled-back role — and slash her pay in the process, sources told The New York Post.
Network leadership is considering shifting King from her co-host chair on “CBS Mornings” into a special correspondent role, or a looser position where she would file occasional reports and focus on celebrity interviews, according to sources with knowledge of the discussions.
The change could come with roughly half of King’s estimated $13 million annual salary, the sources said.
The possible shakeup comes as CBS News editor in chief Bari Weiss continues a sweeping overhaul of the division, a campaign that has stirred internal backlash over staffing and editorial calls.
Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski have discussed the move as part of a broader effort to rein in star salaries that executives increasingly see as unsustainable in today’s media landscape, according to sources. Variety previously reported that outsized talent contracts are falling out of favor across the industry.
King recently sat down for what Page Six described as a “low-key” lunch with Weiss to discuss her future at the network.

King has worked at CBS since 2011
Sources said Weiss values King’s ability to land high-profile interviews and wants to keep her at CBS, but in a different and significantly lower-paid role. King renews her contract annually, and her current deal is set to expire in May.
Weiss took over as editor in chief with a mandate from CBS News’ parent company, Paramount Skydance, to bring more balance to the newsroom.
Her tenure has already sparked controversy. In recent weeks, Weiss shelved a “60 Minutes” segment on El Salvador’s CECOT prison, citing concerns that it was not “comprehensive and fair” and lacked a response from the Trump administration. The decision prompted internal outrage before the piece aired Sunday with three minutes of added material.
Earlier, Weiss installed Tony Dokoupil as anchor of “CBS Evening News,” another high-profile move in a growing list of talent shakeups at the network.
