Trump-Endorsed Candidate Wins Special Election For Kevin McCarthy’s Seat
Endorsed by former President Donald Trump, California Assemblyman Vince Fong has won the special election to fill the Congressional seat vacated by former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). In a significant victory for the Republican Party, the triumph not only marks a personal victory for Fong but also bolsters the GOP’s slim majority in the House of Representatives, providing crucial breathing room for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).
With 87 percent of the votes counted, Fong emerged with a commanding lead over his opponent, fellow Republican Mike Boudreaux, securing 60.2 percent of the vote to Boudreaux’s 39.8 percent. The margin of victory effectively ensures that Fong will serve out the remainder of McCarthy’s term, representing California’s 20th Congressional District.
Following his unprecedented ousting as House Speaker, Kevin McCarthy’s resignation in late 2023 set the stage for a pivotal special election. McCarthy, who played a significant role in shaping GOP policy, endorsed Fong, his former aide in the race. The endorsement, coupled with Trump’s backing, provided Fong with a substantial boost in the highly competitive primary and runoff.
The primary in March had narrowed the field to Fong and Boudreaux, setting up a runoff in accordance with California’s unique election system. Fong’s victory is seen as a testament to his strong political connections and his alignment with key GOP figures. Trump’s endorsement was a particularly significant factor, as the former President continues to exert considerable influence within the Republican Party.

In his victory announcement, Fong expressed his gratitude and humility. “With the campaign over, the real work begins,” Fong stated. “In Congress, I will remain focused on solving the tough issues facing our community—securing the border, supporting small businesses, bringing investment in water storage and infrastructure, unleashing our energy industry, and keeping the United States safe amidst the grave security threats facing our nation.”
The victory also highlights the national implications as Republicans now enjoy a five-vote majority in the House. The margin, though slim, is critical for advancing the GOP’s legislative agenda in a deeply divided Congress. The additional seat provides Speaker Johnson with slightly more leeway in navigating the contentious political landscape.

Fong’s win is the first in a series of special elections that could further shape the balance of power in the House. The next special election is scheduled for June 11 in Ohio’s 6th Congressional District, followed by another on June 25 in Colorado’s 4th District. The elections will fill seats left vacant by GOP representatives who resigned for various reasons.
The upcoming general election in November will see Fong and Boudreaux face off once again, setting the stage for another critical contest. Fong’s current victory, however, has solidified his position as a key player in the Republican Party and a staunch ally of Trump. Former President Trump also celebrated Fong’s victory on social media.
As the GOP looks to maintain and potentially expand its majority in the House, victories like Fong’s are crucial. The party’s focus on strong, Trump-aligned candidates reflects its strategy to rally the conservative base and counter Democratic opposition effectively.
