VIDEO: Ilhan Omar Gives Jaw-Dropping Answer When Asked If She Married Her Brother
In a new interview with MS NOW’s Chris Hayes, embattled U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) gave an eyebrow-raising answer when asked whether there is any truth to the long-standing allegations that she married her brother.
Hayes noted that some observers believe her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, was her brother and that she has previously called the claim a “disgusting lie.” In the interview, he asked who the man was, when the allegations began, and why.
Omar described the claim as originating on a Somali online forum and said people in Minneapolis later asserted she had introduced Elmi as her brother, which she called “insane.” She stated she did not know those individuals.
When Hayes pressed that she was not related to Elmi at all and that there was “not some weird kernel of truth,” Omar replied, “Not to my knowledge.”

Omar’s marital history, as she has described it, includes a 2002 faith-based marriage to Ahmed Hirsi — the father of her children — that was not legally finalized. It also includes a 2009 legal marriage to Elmi, a British citizen of Somali descent, which was followed by a faith-based separation from Elmi in 2011.
The couple then reconciled before legally divorcing in 2017, according to Omar.
She then legally married Hirsi in 2018 before divorcing him in 2020. After that, she married her current spouse, Tim Mynett, in 2020. Elmi had reportedly applied for a marriage-based green card that was later withdrawn after immigration authorities requested additional evidence.
The interview occurred amid an ongoing federal investigation into Omar’s immigration history. On October 12, Homeland Security Investigations agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant at Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence. Agents removed items including a cellphone, computers, notebooks, and a passport.
The probe reportedly examines possible false statements and immigration fraud, including questions about whether Omar or her late father misrepresented her age on citizenship paperwork around 2000. Agents have reportedly obtained DNA material, though no public laboratory results have been released confirming any familial relationship.
In a court filing responding to applications by news organizations and Judicial Watch to unseal the search warrant materials, the Department of Justice identified the subject as “Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi” is the name associated with her 2009 marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, while “Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” is listed as an alias.
The filing requests additional time to respond to the unsealing applications, stating that the warrant has not yet been fully executed. A federal magistrate judge had previously limited certain aspects of the search because of Omar’s status as a member of Congress.
No charges have been filed against Omar as of this report.
