WATCH: GOP Reps SLAMS Weiss’ Appointment As Special Counsel: ‘An Attempt To Whitewash Biden Corruption’
In a heated response to Friday’s developments, GOP Representative Jason Smith (R-MO) fiercely criticized the appointment of U.S. Attorney David Weiss as Special Counsel to investigate Hunter Biden. Appearing on a live Fox News segment, Smith did not mince his words when he labeled the appointment as “an attempt to whitewash the Biden family corruption.”
Smith remarked, “I think that this should be concerning to all Americans.” Delving into the matter, he brought up the previously proposed “sweetheart plea agreement” for Hunter Biden that a Delaware judge deemed “awful and unfair” and subsequently rejected.
The provisions within the plea agreement that particularly caught Smith’s ire included one granting Hunter Biden complete immunity, not just for the crimes at hand but also for any potential future crimes.
Smith highlighted that the Delaware judge had commented on the uniqueness of the plea agreement, saying she had “never seen anything like that before.” Drawing the lines of association, Smith was quick to identify Weiss as the architect behind this controversial plea agreement.

Adding to the fire, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) tweeted on the matter, voicing concerns about the transparency and trustworthiness of the Department of Justice under the Biden administration.
“This action by Biden’s DOJ cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or whitewash the Biden family corruption,” he tweeted. “If Weiss negotiated the sweetheart deal that couldn’t get approved, how can he be trusted as a Special Counsel? House Republicans will continue to pursue the facts for the American people.”

“The question is, who are you going to believe?” Jim Jordan (R-OH) asked during a hearing on the probe’s updates. “I had discussions with departmental officials. Mr. Weiss can’t get his story straight.”
“Three different stories in a five-week time frame. On June 7th, he’s Tarzan, he’s super, I got ultimate authority, ‘I can do what I want. File charges where I want, when I want, and how I want.'” Jordan remarked.

The appointment of a Special Counsel typically allows for an independent, thorough investigation. Still, GOP members like Smith, Jordan, and McCarthy show a deep-rooted mistrust and skepticism that many Republican members hold towards the Biden administration’s handling of the situation.
On June 20, 2023, the DOJ charged Hunter Biden with two counts of failing to pay taxes. Although these charges were initially filed in Delaware, it was largely due to an agreement where Hunter would not challenge the venue and would plead guilty.
However, in a twist during the July 26, 2023 hearing, he pleaded not guilty. This unexpected plea and the stalled plea negotiations are said to be the reason for the DOJ’s push to move the case. The Biden DOJ’s move might be a tactical play, aimed at presenting the charges before a judge more inclined to view Hunter Biden favorably.
According to IRS whistleblowers, charges against Hunter Biden were mysteriously dropped by Weiss even after he approved them. Weiss also appeared to not have total authority in his investigation as he had previously led Congress to believe. There are also allegations that Weiss hid damning evidence from investigators and that his office actively prevented its probe from exploring Joe Biden’s prospective role in his son’s business dealings.
Garland said on Friday, “Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint him as Special Counsel.”
