Jen Psaki, the former White House spox turned MSNBC host, took potshots at new House Speaker Mike Johnson during a recent segment where she criticized his devout Christian beliefs and suggested the Republican is a malignant threat to the American people.
Winding between moments of insinuation and implication, Psaki mocked Johnson for his benign glasses and unassuming demeanor while framing him as a “Christian fundamentalist” who is a threat to Americans’ freedoms because he believes God played a role in his recent election.
“First glance, Mike Johnson does seem fine. Fine-ish. Conservative, yes. But he once started a civility caucus with a Democrat. And I mean, if nothing else, he wears a suit and has glasses. How threatening can this guy actually be?”
“Well, he gave us all a little clue as to how he would govern in an interview this week,” Psaki said before cutting to Johnson expounding on his religious beliefs.
“I am a Bible-believing Christian. Someone asked me today in the media, they said, well, it’s curious. People are curious, what does Mike Johnson think about any issue under the sun?” he said in the clip. “I said, ‘Well, go pick up a Bible off your shelf and read it. That’s that’s my world view.’”
“I believe that scripture, the Bible, is very clear that God is the one that raises up those in authority. He raised up each of you. All of us. And I believe that God has allowed and ordained each and every one of us to be here at this specific moment. This is my belief. I believe that each one of us has a huge responsibility today to use the gifts God has given us to serve the extraordinary people of this great nation, and they deserve it.”
The speech, Psaki said, reveals just how “scary” Johnson should be.
“Most Americans might not be able to pick Mike Johnson out of a lineup, but in reality, he’s far from benign,” said Psaki. “It’s not just his political ideology that should scare us. Johnson is basically a Christian fundamentalist.”
