At 81, country singer Lee Greenwood sings “God Bless the U.S.A.” as strongly as the day he released his patriotic hit in 1984.

Dozens of MAGA fans were on hand for a private reception at Mar-a-Lago with former President Donald Trump, who took to the podium after Greenwood awed the crowd with a stirring rendition of his trademark tune. A pan of the crowd shows Trump supporters waving their arms in song and crooning along. He wished blessings on number 45, “soon to be the 47th president,” President Trump who thanked him for warming up the audience.

“You’re amazing. Thank you very much. It’s been such an incredible song for all of us. It’s been with us for a long time, and we appreciate it Lee,” said the former president.

Released as the final track on Greenwood’s album “You’ve Got a Good Love Comin’,” “God Bless the U.S.A.” rose to number 7 on the Billboard Top 100 country singles that year and later made its way into the Republican National Convention.

“I have been associated with the Republican Party,” Greenwood told the Washington Post at the time. “We are doing things with the Reagans and Bushes.” The Democratic Party also requested the song to play at their convention that year.

According to Greenwood, the GOP took up “God Bless the U.S.A.” after he sang on Merv Griffin’s late-night show in honor of his birthday, which also happened to be the birthday of then-First Lady Nancy Reagan. Greenwood mailed a tape of the performance to the White House.

The country singer hasn’t been shy about voicing his support for Republican causes in the decades since his signature song became a staple of patriotic events. He recently partnered with President Trump to sell a campaign-endorsed version of the Bible which recently hit stores for $59.99.

Titled “God Bless the USA,” Trump’s Bible is  “inspired by Lee Greenwood’s patriotic anthem ‘God Bless the USA,'” according to the publisher’s page, and is the “only Bible endorsed by President Trump.” In addition to including Greenwood’s lyrics, the traditional text of the King James Bible is interspersed with text from American artifacts including the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights, Declaration of Independence, and the Pledge of Allegiance.

In 2008, President George W. Bush nominated Greenwood to serve on the National Council of Arts, which he did until stepping down in 2022. In 2018, Greenwood was awarded the MMP Music Award and was inducted into the MMP Hall of Fame by Commander Joseph W. Clark.

Fans of Greenwood’s performance thanked him for his patriotism as well as his support for Trump.

“Greenwood is 81-years-old and is still sharp and strong. He’s the complete opposite of Joe Biden who’s the same age,” wrote another fan.

Inside Mar-a-Lago, Greenwood and President Trump were joined by actor Jon Voight, who has been a staunch supporter of Israel, even rebuking his own daughter, Angelina Jolie, over her calls for the Jewish nation to scale back its offensive into Gaza.
