WATCH: ‘The View’ Host Cries Racism After Super Bowl Backlash
A conservative backlash at the Super Bowl halftime performance is racist, declared one member of “The View” on Monday.
Ana Navarro, co-host of the ultra-liberal ABC talk show, has heard enough complaints about rapper Kendrick Lamar and his lackluster halftime show, which has been criticized for everything from its focus on Black performances to a lack of mainstream hits and focus on his beef with singer Drake.
She began her rant by joking that “Donald Trump is going to sign an executive order banning Black people from halftime.”
The audience belly laughed, but Navarro indicated she was being very serious.
“You remember last week when we were talking about whether the NFL was capitulating to Trump by removing the term ‘end racism’ from the end zone. Boy did they not capitulate to Trump,” she said.
Citing actor Samuel L. Jackson’s costume as a “Black Uncle Sam” and Lamar’s “entire formation of all Black people making a U.S. flag,” Navarro added, “This much I know: all the Black people in my feed were like, ‘Wooh, this is blackitty black black.'”
“And all the racists who somehow get in, man were they hopping mad. So if the racists are mad, I am happy as a clam! Welcome to Black History Month, y’all!” she yelled.

Dialogue in conservative circles about Lamar’s performance was more nuanced than Navarro portrayed, however.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning artist was conspicuously quiet during the election season even as fellow rappers like Eminem, 50 Cent, Sexxy Red, and Waka Flocka Flame sided with their respective presidential candidates. Others pointed out that the lack of overt political messaging in the halftime show was relieving to see just three years after hip-hop artists took the stage and kneeled in solidarity with Black Lives Matter protestors.
Instead, the performance served as a vengeance of sorts for Lamar, who made the zenith of his 15 minutes on stage a rendition of “Not Like Us.” The five-time Grammy-winning diss song is heavily focused on calling out Drake for alleged pedophilia and grooming underage girls. Anything else observed or criticized by viewers almost certainly carried less weight than Lamar’s ultimate intention for being there.
Another celebrity who faced the wrath of NFL fans on Super Bowl Sunday was Taylor Swift, who was roundly booed by Philadelphia Eagles fans after appearing on the jumbotron cheering on her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The pop singer looked awkwardly at her friends before attempting to laugh off the hate.
