Johnson Throws Cold Water On Biden’s Massive Aid Proposal, Prefers Separate Bills

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told Fox News that the House will decouple aid for Israel and Ukraine, instead opting for separate bills.

In a rare address to the nation last week, President Biden announced plans for a new $100 billion aid package that includes $60 billion for Ukraine, $10 billion for Israel and smaller payments for Taiwan. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has signaled interest in working with Democrats to pass the bill, stating that it is necessary to combat the “axis of evil” in the world.

Johnson has signaled his intention to separate different portions of the aid package into separate bills, however.

“Well, listen, we’re going to move a stand-alone Israel funding bill this week in the House,” Johnson told Sunday Morning Futures host Maria Bartiromo.

“I know our colleagues, our Republican colleagues in the Senate, have a similar measure. We believe that that is a pressing and urgent need. There are lots of things going on around the world that we have to address, and we will. But right now, what’s happening in Israel takes the immediate attention and I think we’ve got to separate that and get it through,” he continued. ” I believe there will be bipartisan support for that and I’m going to push very hard for I believe there will be bipartisan support for that and I’m going to push very hard for it.”

Earlier this week, Johnson told Sean Hannity that House Republicans will be demanding increased oversight for any funds being sent to Ukraine.

“We have a responsibility, a stewardship responsibility over the precious treasure of American people, and we have to make sure that the White House is providing the people with some accountability for the dollars, and we want to know what the objective there is,” the new House Speaker said. “What is the endgame in Ukraine? The White House has not provided that.”
