The president’s son will be facing a total of nine additional tax-related charges, including allegations that the president’s son failed to pay taxes, failed to file, evaded an assessment and filed a fraudulent form. The 56-page filing alleges that Biden spent money on an “extravagant lifestyle” rather than pay his taxes.
The case was assigned to Judge Mark Scarsi, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump, according to a report from NBC News. Hunter could be facing upwards of 19 years in prison, according to Special Counsel David Weiss’ office.
In October, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to in October to federal gun charges in U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware after being charged by Weiss, who has worked on the case for years as a U.S. attorney.
“According to the indictment, Hunter Biden engaged in a four-year scheme in which he chose not to pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019 and to evade the assessment of taxes for tax year 2018 when he filed false returns,” Weiss’ office said in a press release.
Hunter was initially slated to plead guilty to a number of lesser charges earlier this year, though the deal was ultimately scrapped after Biden-appointed officials were found to have meddled in the investigation. Weiss was then appointed as special counsel and opted to bring the gun charges first.
The president’s son has found himself at the center of numerous corruption probes into President Biden’s alleged involvement with Hunter’s business dealings with foreign nationals. House investigators have uncovered numerous bank records showing payments to President Biden, including one from his brother, James, that came from a Chinese energy firm with ties to the nation’s communist government.
Biden has claimed that the payment was part of a “loan repayment.”
In addition, House investigators have revealed bank records detailing $15 million in payments from Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Romania to numerous members of the Biden family.
President Biden has claimed that he has always kept a “wall” between his political activities and his son’s business dealings though this has been proven false. Devon Archer — a longtime business partner of Hunter’s — testified that Biden routinely met with his son’s business contacts, adding that Hunter’s purpose was to sell the “Biden brand” around the world.
Hunter Biden is currently slated to sit for a closed-door deposition with House Republicans — who are following protocols used by Democrats during the Trump impeachments — on December 13. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) has threatened to hold Hunter in contempt of congress if he fails to show.
This is a developing story.
