JUST IN: Al Green Gets Censured By Congress, Shouting Match Ensues
Al Green (D-TX), the fiery Texas congressman who shouted and shook his cane at President Donald Trump during his congressional address this week, has officially been censured for his actions.
The consequence came less than two days after Green was escorted from the floor of the U.S. House for throwing a tantrum during President Trump’s remarks. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) was in the middle of reading the resolution, which passed in a 224-198 vote Thursday morning, when Democrats congregated in the well of the floor and began to sing.
The absurd scene was reported on by Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman.
“There’s now shouting match in the house well between democrats and republicans after the Green censure. Things going really well here,” he wrote on X.
C-SPAN video shows several dozen Democrats huddled in front of Speaker Johnson as he gavels and shushes the crowd in an attempt to restore order. When they refuse to disperse, Johnson calls a recess to pause the day’s business and quell the unrest.

On Wednesday, an unrepentant Green posted a photograph of his protest on social media, writing, “Last night I stood up for those who need Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security. Democrats will never abandon the fight to make sure every American has a safe, healthy, and financially secure life. #ISaidWhatISaid”
His censure is the third faced by a Democratic member of Congress since Johnson became speaker in October of 2023. In December of that year, former Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) was censured by colleagues after pulling a fire alarm in an attempt to disrupt the passage of legislation by House Republicans. One month prior, House Republicans censured Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MN) for chanting antisemitic phrases during an anti-Israel rally.
The Democrats’ inability to mount serious opposition to Republican control in Washington, D.C., is taking a mental toll on the party. In advance of Trump’s speech, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) warned his caucus against outbursts or bringing props with them but was roundly ignored by a slew of Democratic lawmakers who brought signs and shirts opposing many of Trump’s policies.
Even fellow progressives criticized the gestures as overly weak under the glare of the national spotlight.
Many of their callouts were “very silly, and unserious, but I can’t help but feel some level of empathy for them,” one Democratic strategist told Politico. “I’m sure they feel like they have to do something, anything … That wasn’t it.”
The capstone of criticism came when Democrats failed to stand or applaud 13-year-old DJ Daniel, a young boy battling brain cancer who was President Trump’s guest Tuesday night and was made an honorary member of the U.S. Secret Service. Their reaction, as well as a “repulsive” backhanded compliment of Daniel by MSNBC host Nicole Wallace, added insult to injury at a time when Democrats are so desperate for a way forward that they’ve begun to ask Republicans for advice.
