Matt Gaetz Unleashes After Nadler Shuts Down Pledge of Allegiance Request
During a Wednesday hearing of the House Judiciary Committee, Democratic New York Representative Jerry Nadler rejected Republican Florida Representative Matt Gaetz’s request to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
During the first Judiciary hearing under the new Republican-led Congress, Gaetz proposed an amendment to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of each hearing, to which Nadler replied, “I would oppose it simply on the grounds that, as members know, we recite the Pledge of Allegiance daily on the floor, and I don’t see the need to repeat it in the same day to demonstrate our patriotism.” Gaetz stated that he believed it would be a unifying and patriotic gesture.
Gaetz told the Daily Caller, “Standing for the American flag isn’t controversial. Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance isn’t a waste of time. Democrats are so outraged at the idea of a daily dose of patriotism that they spent 30 minutes ranting and raving in opposition.” He continued, “Congress cannot expect the American people to believe they are fighting for their values when they don’t even care to recite the Pledge of Allegiance.”
Republican North Carolina Rep. Dan Bishop, had Gaetz’s back, and told the Daily Caller the following:
“It’s absurd that Democrats on the committee don’t even want to say the pledge of allegiance. You would think it would be a simple request – not so for the Judiciary Democrats, who almost seemed allergic to reciting the pledge.”
In 2021, House Judiciary Committee Democrats seemingly mocked Matt Gaetz’s request to recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the hearings, caught on a hot microphone. The Daily Caller obtained a video recording of the hearing that included audio of several Democrats joking about the Republicans’ request to recite the Pledge of Allegiance before the committee hearings.
🚨 HAPPENING NOW: @RepMattGaetz just requested that the Judiciary Committee recite the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of each hearing. @RepJerryNadler said it was "unnecessary."

The video showed Tennessee Democratic Representative Steve Cohen and an unknown House Democrat appearing to joke about the request, until they were reminded by a staff member that their microphones were live, according to the audio.
This video contained the following transcript:
Rep. Steve Cohen: “Okay, so somebody, I missed a little bit of what we just had, uh uh I wake up in the morning and I pledge allegiance to the flag, I go outside regardless of the weather, I got my flag up by my house and I pledge allegiance. Then I get on my knees and I pray. If I do that, if I, do I have to, am I supposed to do it again and how many times a day should I do that?”
Unidentified Democrat: “I think you should do it at least every hour.”
Rep. Steve Cohen: “Hour, right?”
Rep. Steve Cohen: “Right, duck and cover.”
Rep. Pramila Jayapal: “(Laughter) That ages me, right? I’m going to vote.”
Rep. Steve Cohen: “Pramila you should do something about this as head of the CPC, I charge you with the responsibility.”
They go on.
Rep. Steve Cohen: “I remember in the first grade we had something like this.”
Unidentified Democrat: “I remember too, I remember on Fridays at 10 o clock we duck below our desks in the event of a nuclear bomb.”
Unbelievable. @RepJerryNadler just said he opposes @RepMattGaetz's offer to say the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE before Judiciary Committee meetings. pic.twitter.com/ynaw3Wqoz6
