‘SPEECHLESS’: CNN Data Guru Says Trump Is Tracking For ‘Historic’ Showing With Black Voters

The senior data reporter for CNN was floored by his latest findings showing that former President Donald Trump’s progress with Black voters is approaching never-before-seen levels for a modern Republican presidential candidate.

Harry Enten, who has previously highlighted deep discontent among Black voters with President Joe Biden, said the race for the White House will hinge on this critical voting bloc, especially in key swing states like Georgia and Michigan.

“I keep looking for this to change, to go back to a historical norm, and it simply put, has not yet,” Enten said in reference to Trump’s growing slice of the electorate. Since 2020, Biden’s lead with Black voters has slipped to 70% from 81% while Trump’s margin has grown to 21%, a quantum leap from the mere 7% he earned four years ago.

“That’s a 16-point drop, John,” Enten told his colleague, “and more than that, it’s not just that Joe Biden is losing ground. It’s that Donald Trump is gaining ground.

“If anything, we’re careening towards a historic performance for a Republican presidential candidate, the likes of which we have not seen in six decades,” he added.

Asked to explain the makeup of Black voters who have pledged their vote to President Trump, Enten said the breakdown is among his most interesting findings in the latest poll. Age is a strong predictor of support for Biden: he leads among Black voters 50 and older by 74 points, but among the younger cohort his lead has shrunk to +37. Those leads were +83 and +80 four years ago, respectively.

“A slight decline” among older Black voters, “but nothing out of this world,” Enten observed. When it came to the change among younger Black voters, “Holy cow,” he exclaimed.

“That lead has dropped by more than half. I’ve just never seen anything like this. I’m, like, speechless. Because you always look at history and go ‘OK, this is a historical moment.’ If this polling is anywhere near correct, we’re looking at a historic moment right now where Black voters under the age of 50, which have been such a big part of the Democratic coalition, are leaving in droves.”

Enten’s findings are in line with earlier polls showing Trump’s encroachment among Black voters growing sizably. The data also mirror street-level signs of support for Trump in Georgia where throngs of Black voters lined up to cheer on his motorcade as he arrived in Fulton County to have his mugshot taken. Trump last month held a rally in the sapphire-blue Bronx, the first presidential candidate to appear there in recent history and who drew a diverse spectrum of New Yorkers who appeared sympathetic to his ongoing criminal prosecution. Others have simply dubbed themselves part of the “Trump Gang.” On Saturday, President Trump held a conference with Black pastors in Detroit, one of whom thanked him for being the first candidate in years to visit “the hood.”

Democrats in response have wasted no energy on trying to surmise why Black voters are gravitating toward the Republican leader. Former NBA star Charles Barkley threatened to punch any Black person he saw wearing a Trump mugshot t-shirt while Sunny Hostin of “The View” recently reprimanded a young Black conservative who wrote about the conservative transition he has seen taking place among peers in his generation.
