Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), was notably absent from the weekly Senate GOP press conference on Tuesday following an incident during a closed-door lunch.

Around midday, signs of urgency began to unfold as a wheelchair was wheeled into McConnell’s office just before 1 p.m., according to Fox News. A short time later, members of Washington, D.C.’s fire and rescue team were seen entering and exiting the senator’s office. It was not immediately clear whether McConnell had suffered injuries or the severity of the situation.

The 82-year-old senator fell during the lunch, sources familiar with the matter confirmed. Medical responders entered the scene briefly before departing. Shortly after the incident, a spokesperson from McConnell’s office confirmed that he had suffered a “minor cut” to the face and a “sprained wrist.”

“Leader McConnell tripped following lunch. He sustained a minor cut to the face and sprained his wrist. He has been cleared to resume his schedule,” the spokesperson stated.

McConnell stumbled and fell while transitioning from a private GOP luncheon to the Senate floor in the Capitol, a person with knowledge of the incident revealed to CNN. The same source noted that McConnell’s mobility has been partially compromised for years due to the effects of polio he suffered as a child.

During a Republican press conference following the lunch, newly-elected Senate Republican Leader John Thune (R-SD), set to replace McConnell in January, addressed questions about McConnell’s recent fall. “He’s fine, he’s in his office.”

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) who is also a physician and was present when McConnell fell, also confirmed that he is fine. Barrasso said that McConnell “walked back from lunch, back to his office,” indicating that he was able to return to his office on his own after the incident.

McConnell’s fall comes as the Kentucky Republican continues to navigate public scrutiny over his health. Last year, McConnell experienced two concerning freezing episodes during public appearances, which led to questions about his ability to remain in leadership. His office later attributed those moments to recovery from a concussion sustained in March after a fall at a Washington hotel.

McConnell’s staff quickly intervened, steadying the Senator and wrapping up the press event without providing immediate clarification about his condition. McConnell also froze up in a press briefing in July 2023 as well.

In March of 2023, McConnell was hospitalized and later transferred to a rehabilitation facility after sustaining injuries from a fall during a private dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Washington, D.C. It was later revealed that the injuries were more severe than initially reported, including a concussion and fractured ribs.

McConnell, who has served in the Senate since 1985, remains one of the most powerful figures in Washington. He is slated to fulfill his duties in the Senate until his term ends in January 2027.
