In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Alina Habba, the attorney and spokesperson for former President Donald J. Trump, fervently defended the former president amidst the backdrop of the Georgia indictment that has ensnared Trump and several of his close associates.
Habba declared the recent mugshot of Trump as “one of the best things that’s ever happened to President Trump,” pointing to the surge in political and fundraising support in the wake of the indictment. Addressing the potential legal implications for Trump, she stated, “He’s innocent on every criminal charge, unless the jury finds him guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.”
When probed about the weight of such potential consequences, Habba confidently responded, “No, Shannon, because what you just displayed I think says it all. That is all intentional. That is exactly what they wanted to do.”
The attorney didn’t mince words when addressing the alleged collaboration between District Attorney Fani Willis and Jack Smith. “Think about how Fani, when she was asked at her press conference if she was coordinating with Jack Smith and D.C. and the government, couldn’t give us a yes or no. That says it all,” Habba remarked, suggesting a deeper, coordinated effort against Trump.
WATCH:
Court docket paperwork filed Monday indicated that President Trump will be arraigned on September 6th in Atlanta along with his former attorney Rudy Giuliani who last week surrendered to authorities on similar charges. On that date, President Trump must appear at 9:30 AM EST in Fulton County District Court and enter a plea to the 13 felony counts he is facing. Giuliani will appear at 9:45 AM.
With a timeline packed with impending court dates and trials, all during Trump’s potential run for the presidency, Habba was questioned about the logistical challenges of preparing a client for multiple trials while simultaneously running a campaign.
In the days since his indictment, attorneys for the former president have called the case “desperation at its best” and characterized Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis as a Democrat intent on playing politics with the case. President Trump has attacked Willis’ credibility by insinuating she carried on an affair with a gang leader she later prosecuted.
The outpouring of support for President Trump has come from surprising corners as shown last week when throngs of Black residents lined the streets of Fulton County and said Trump is innocent of the charges. Post-indictment polls show the GOP leader still dominating the party’s field, and he remains the favorite to defeat President Joe Biden in next year’s election.
Habba praised Trump’s intelligence and familiarity with the facts of the cases, stating, “President Trump is not your average person. He’s incredibly intelligent and he knows the ropes. He also knows the facts because he lives them.”
Addressing the issue of a Trump employee who reportedly changed his testimony, she expressed her sympathy for the witnesses. “It is very nerve-wracking for all these defendants… to go in front of a grand jury, even as an attorney is a very frightening thing,” she described.
Habba remained steadfast in her defense of the former president: “When we get our chance, we will show exactly what happened and how the president is, frankly, vindicated.”
To get to the general election, however, President Trump will need to overcome at least four criminal indictments, two of which relate to the 2020 election. Trump and his defenders have characterized all four prosecutions as run by Democrats or the Biden Justice Department and being ripe with political interference while prosecutors in Georgia, Manhattan, and Washington, D.C. have maintained they are following the facts. House Republicans and a Republican lawmaker in Georgia are pursuing separate investigations of DA Willis, the latter of which may lead to impeachment.
