REPORT: Trump Is Considering A Return To Twitter; Here’s What We Know

Former President Donald Trump is seriously contemplating a return to Twitter, a move that would upend media coverage of the 2024 presidential election and surely generate a mountain of new headlines for President Trump as he wages battles both in the courtroom and on the campaign trail.

Sources close to the 45th president told Axios that his return to Twitter, once a refuge where Trump could air his grievances and take his message directly to the public, may be imminent. For the past year, President Trump has maintained his exclusivity with Truth Social where he is a majority owner and has a financial stake in its success. However, the allure of reopening his account on one of America’s most mainstream social media outlets may be too difficult to ignore.

With Biden administration prosecutors pursuing President Trump in federal court, people close to the former president’s team feel a return to Twitter would enable him to more forcefully combat the allegations of wrongdoing which consumed media headlines in the weeks following his latest indictment. Sources say his return to Twitter, where President Trump amassed over 88 million followers before he was permanently banned from the platform in the wake of the January 6, 2021 Capitol breach, could be a potent force for offsetting bad news, including another possible indictment.

Social media watchers believe President Trump is caught between a lucrative business deal and the chance for greater media exposure.

“President Trump needs to make Twitter great again. I want him to get back on before the presidential campaign heats up,” says Mike Davis, a Trump ally and founder of The Article III Project, a conservative legal group. “From a business perspective, it’s very smart he’s only on Truth. From a political perspective, he needs to be on Twitter.”

On Truth Social, the former president has gained five million followers where he “reTruths” positive statements from allies in Congress, favorable polling, and clips from conservative media. His unending popularity means that his public statements usually make their way over to Twitter via his followers, but reopening a full-fledged account — especially under the new leadership of Elon Musk who has promised more favorable terms for Trump’s return — could be the key asset for Trump as he battles prosecutors and campaign foes like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
