This Republican Is Doing Whatever He Can To Keep Jordan From The Gavel

The forces against Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) are already conspiring to move on from his bid to become House Speaker, as one of the key architects of the opposition plans to file a motion today to permanently elect Speaker Pro Temp Patrick McHenry (R-NC) to the position.

Punchbowl News reports that Rep. David Joyce (R-OH) plans to immediately file a motion in support of McHenry following a second vote of the House for its new Speaker which is slated for later today. Rep. Jordan failed to assemble a coalition of 217 members after a segment of moderate and establishment Republicans refused to buckle under a withering outside pressure campaign by conservative media and grassroots activists.

Rep. Joyce, who has served since 2013, is a member of the clubby Appropriations Committee whose members have frequently been at odds with Rep. Jordan over the years as his band of House Freedom Caucus members have complained about the bloated expansion of government by so-called conservatives. Joyce previously said he would theoretically vote to remove Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and his eight hardliners who originally filed a motion to vacate the Speaker’s chair which led to the ouster of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

“If it was up to me, I’d vote for it,” Joyce said in an interview on CNN’s “Inside Politics.”
